As you work in Excel, Copilot can proactively suggest formulas for you. It can complete a formula as soon as you type = or turn a few example values into a reusable formula. If you prefer not to see these suggestions, you can turn them off. This article explains how to turn Copilot formula suggestions off and back on in Excel for Windows and Excel for the web.
Note
When you turn a setting off, it stays off until you turn it back on the same way. It isn't a one-time dismissal. Excel remembers your choice the next time you open the app.
What each option controls
Both settings appear together under Copilot options. Each one controls a different feature, so you can turn off one, the other, or both.
Show Copilot suggestions for completing formulas
This setting controls formula completion. When it's on, as soon as you type = in a cell, Copilot suggests a complete formula based on the context of your data, including headers, nearby cells, and tables. It also shows a preview of the result and a short explanation of what the formula does. As you keep typing, the suggestion updates in real time.
For more information, see Introducing formula completion - A new way to write formulas in Excel using Copilot.
Show Copilot suggestions for formulas based on patterns in your content
This setting controls formula by example. When it's on and you type a few example values that follow a pattern, such as extracting a ZIP code from an address or a first name from a full name, Copilot detects the pattern and suggests a single formula to fill the rest of the column. Because it inserts a formula instead of pasted values, the results update automatically when your data changes.
